Howell's love for African-American history has shaped
the direction of his life and made him an effective
forces for building better race relations. He collects
item depicting Black history in American - some of it
negative, such as slave shackles and KKK propaganda, but
much of it positive, such as Life magazine covers with
African Americans. His Collection is composed of several
thousand pieces. He often organizes exhibitions of a
thousand articles and travels with a van full of
memorabilia to illustrate Black History and talk about
race relations at schools, churches, civic clubs, and
corporate offices.
Howell
has a fulltime job as an electronics inspector, so he
has to juggle his work schedule to honor the many
requests that come from those groups. He and his family
have sacrificed financially to build the
collection.
Whether
talking with fourth graders or conducting diversity
training at a bank, Howell has a clear message for his
audience about the pain caused by racial prejudice and
the benefits of racial harmony and cooperation. Some
day, he hopes that a museum to house his collection will
be part of his race relations work.
